Frostpunk Console Review

About Frostpunk

In an ultimately frozen world, people develop steam-powered technology to oppose the overwhelming cold. The city ruler has to manage both the inhabitants and the infrastructure the citizens live in. The Leader’s tactical skills face challenges, frequently questioning morality and the basic foundation of what we consider an organized society. Here optimization and resource management often clash with empathy and thoughtful decision-making. While city and society management consume most of the ruler’s time, at some point exploration of outside world is necessary to understand its history and present state.

Become a leader of a steam-powered City, the last bastion of humanity. Oversee your society, manage resources and make difficult, ambiguous choices. But whatever you do, always remember: The City Must Survive. Frostpunk takes on what people are capable of when pushed to the limits. What interests us is what society do to survive and how it changes in the process. How survival in the end leaves us different beings. If worse, better, stronger, weaker or, last but not least, more or less humane – that is debatable.

Gameplay

It took a little while to learn the controls it’s not that they are complicated its more the lack of a comprehensive tutorial (there isn’t one) That said it after about 30-45 mins I had an understanding of what I was doing.

From the start, you are chucked into the action of trying to save your tribe, with key indicators of what the public wants. Being that you are mayor the chances are the decisions you make are not going to go down well with the people. Example in the cold where resources are tight setting up forced child labour is still looked upon as a no-no. But we have to survive somehow.

The main story campaign is fairly hard and the wrong decisions will ultimately cause you to be expelled into the cold away from the city to meet your fate.
Overall it makes you want to try again and succeed in government.

Otherwise, you can sandbox mode the game and start of with all the bits needed to play, I tried this mode and 4 hours past without realising the time had disappeared.

Graphics

Visually the graphics in the game are stunning, with a level of zooming in to see what the townsfolk are doing, to the inevitable snowstorms that will hit throughout the game. This game holds a Beauty that draws you into the game.

Longevity

Longevity is always a question I ask myself when playing this type of game, will it last, will I get bored, is it something I will return to in coming months.

The simple answer yes, the game is engaging and playable even if you have a couple of hours to kill. Thou it will lose out if you do play a lot of online multiplayer games. Gaming is a social event after all. but for the quiet times, this is a must.
